On Sunday, September 25th 2016, bicycle lovers from all of Japan gathered in Iwate prefecture for “The 5nd Tour de Sanriku” ,running through the disaster-stricken areas of the 3.11 earthquake.
The 1000 bikers went around the coast,visiting Rikuzentakata city and Ofunato city and showing their support. GSA was a special cooperator for this rally, engaging Arm powered bike distance World record holder Greg Hockensmith, GSA Tucson Team Captain, and President of the Perimeter Bicycling Association of America (PBAA), Richard DeBernardis and participating as volunteer staff for the rally.



There were five courses prepared for diverse participants, from the 49 km course that goes through the picturesque scene of Goishi shore and experienced entrants, to the 17km Family Course, all coming together at the temporary playground of Rikuzentakata Dai-chi Junior high school where the starting /finish line was set.Handcycle Time Trial World Champion Greg Hockensmith, also entered as the special honorary rider.





At GSA booth, we demonstrated human power(pedal a bike)electric generation and try for light up “The miracle pine*”.
Also President of PBAA, Richard introduce the 10,000 participants of the events El Tour de TUCSON.
*A lone pine tree that stood as a symbol of hope in Japan, after surviving the huge tsunami that swept away a forest.


From GSA, 34 people participated as cycling leaders- one per group as a pace-maker-and volunteer staff.
