A GSA-USA Open Forum was held on 23 February 2008 at the offices of the Perimeter Bicycling Association of America in Tucson, Arizona, to kick-start the activities of the organization that was officially established as a non-profit organization in the United States last year.
GSA Executive Director, Tatsuo Okada attended the meetings that drew together GSA USA Board Members, local sporting event organizers and athletes, as well as environmentalists. The goal of the forum was to consolidate the future actions of the organization and to select GSA USA's first officially elected President.
Dr. Okada took part in the event to make sure that those involved in GSA USA's future actions had a clear understanding of GSA's philosophy, the Ecoflag Movement, and our goal of uniting a billion sport enthusiasts worldwide to make fair play and Ecoplay a natural part of sportsmanship.
GSA-USA's first Board Meeting was also held on the morning of the 23rd and top of the agenda was the election of a President. In this, the organization was extremely fortunate to secure Jane Poynter for that role.
British-born Jane spent 2 years inside the artificial world, Biosphere 2 and wrote a book, "The Human Experiment: Two Years and Twenty Minutes Inside Biosphere 2", about her experiences. She is President of Paragon Space Development Corporation, which develops technologies for extreme environments and she is a consultant on sustainable development and cool things green. She has worked with the World Bank on projects to mitigate global climate change and grow crops in drought-stricken Africa and Central America, and has appeared on numerous television and radio shows.
As her first orders of business, Jane is working on setting up GSA USA's website, the initial stage of which will go live in May, and is planning to promote the organization at an Earth Day celebration at Reid Park, Tucson on 19th April. She will also be running a GSA booth at the upcoming El Tour de Tucson Mountains on 27 April and has signed up to take part on an environmental radio talk show in early May to talk about GSA.
