A Sport and Environment Forum was held on 16 October, looking at the role that sport can play in tackling environmental problems. Former Japan national soccer coach, Takeshi Okada and sportswriter, Midori Masujima took part as panelists, with much of the focus looking at the role that football can play. Takeshi was involved with the World Cup in Germany and through his dealing with FIFA, was able to give some interesting insight as well as share his feelings about how soccer can contribute to environmental awareness and action.
Midori talked about the role of the sports media and her reflections on the actions taken during previous Olympic Games. Pro beach volleyball player, Kentaro Asahi was also at the Forum to share his own experience and environmental message.
About 180 people took part in the event and GSA handed out its recently published Sport and Environment Handbook, which outlines what events can do to reduce the impact of the event, as well as raising the consciousness of athletes and spectators.
