A Conference on Physical Education and Sports took place at the Faculty of Physical Culture, "Nancy Uranga Romagoza" Sports University, Pinar del Rio, Cuba on 10-14 April 2007. Jason Chare, Deputy Director of NPO Global Sports Alliance (GSA) gave the keynote speech outlining the history of the 'sport and environment' movement and GSA's role in promoting environmental awareness and action worldwide.
The presentation was in English with Spanish translation provided by GSA Cuba Team Captain, Fernando Valladares Fuente. The floor was then opened for Q&A, and brochures were distributed among the audience.
Environmental workshops were included as part of the 4-day conference and the GSA representatives gladly took part. The workshop focused on attitudes to environmental issues and sustainable development and involved hands on activities with participants breaking into groups to discuss their attitudes and beliefs, followed by presentations to the whole assembly.
The trip also included a visit to the Vinales Valley, an area of 132 km2 and part of Sierra de los Organos, in Pinar del Rio province. This cultural landscape that is enriched by traditional farm and village architecture, has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since November 1999.
During the trip discussions took place with the GSA Cuba Team Captain regarding the future development of the team in Cuba. The team captain's environmental concern and enthusiasm to promote the Ecoflag Movement was clearly evident and we look forward to increasing our collaborations in the area.
